Graduate School Interview Tips

I can now say I have had my first graduate school interview! I went in not really knowing what to expect because I didn't know anyone who had done one before. Mine was a lot more casual than I thought it would be. I was asked maybe three questions then she let me ask questions for the rest of the time. I wanted to post some tips for others that may be getting ready to interview for graduate school.

Tips for Graduate School Interviews

1. Be yourself. This was the biggest tip I received before going in for my interview. Showing your personality gives the interviewer a chance to see the real you and get to know what kind of person you are.

2. Prepare questions ahead of time. My interviewer only asked me two questions and left the rest of the time for me to ask what I wanted to know. I'm sure it is different for each school, but I would have questions prepared in case the interviewer lets you take the floor.

3. Scope out the campus. Explore the campus and figure out where you need to go. You won't want to be late for your interview so it is a good idea to check out maps and find exactly where you need to be before your interview.

4. Find visitor parking. You won't want to get a parking ticket for parking in the wrong place your first time on campus! Call ahead to find out where you can locate visitor parking spots and scope those out when you explore the campus.

5. Know a little about the school. You don't need to know every little fact about the history or the founders of the school, but do have a little knowledge on the program you are applying to so the interviewer knows you are serious about the program.

6. Dress professional. You'll want to look your best for this interview! It is a professional program after all! Plus, it gives you an excuse to buy a new outfit ;)

7. Check out the area around the school. If you'll be moving to a new place, you'll need to know where the basics, like Target, Kroger, and Starbucks, are located.

8. Relax! You might be really nervous for your interview, but I promise there is nothing to be nervous about! Just remember to breathe :)
