Tips For Splitting Bills With Your Roommates

Bills are an every day part of life, so this is an important skill to understand sooner rather than later. I live with three other roommates. We all pay our own rent, and we are each in charge of a utility, because our apartment includes nothing. So we have one person in charge of each- electric, water/sewer, internet, and cable, and then we divide the cost by four.

When moving in with three other people, it is important to assign who will get what so you do not end up with multiples that you do not need. I bought the living room tv and entertainment center. One roommate bought a couch, coffee table, and lamp. Both of the others bought recliners and dishes for the kitchen. We all brought our own cups (we love Tervis Tumblers). Our apartment came with a microwave, so we divided up the rest of the small appliances including a Keurig, blender, hand mixer, etc.

As far as groceries and things go, the only things we share are paper towels, condiments, baking stuff/ spices, and hand soap in the kitchen. We take turns buying them when we are out. We all buy our own food and just label it with our initials. Sometimes we also split basic stuff like milk and eggs because we know one won't be able to use it all before it goes bad. We never really talked about splitting groceries, this is just kind of how it worked out.

My biggest tip is to plan in advance. We created a Google Doc that listed everything we thought we would want for our apartment, and we each picked colors to mark it off on the Google Doc when someone purchased it. This saved us a lot of chaos, and helped us make sure we were all spending around the same amount of money.
