Your first apartment is like the your second (after college) big step to being a grown up. Moving in to my first college apartment at 19 years old was an experience. I had more stuff than I ever thought I could need, and yet there was still some stuff I never thought about that I wish someone would have told me to bring. So here is that list :)
1. Snow Shovel- You're probably thinking why the hell would you need this when there are grounds people that maintain everything in the winter months. Yes, the maintenance men in my apartment are wonderful, but when they plow snow, they leave banks behind cars that are impossible for your car to back out of for days. You'll want a snow shovel in order to dig your car out at some point in your apartment life.
2. A real vacuum- No, that tiny little stick piece of crap vacuum will not cut it in an apartment. Girls shed hair like crazy. So living in an apartment with three other girls means you are multiplying your shedding hair by a lot, and making a million hairballs. Do yourself a favor and get a real vacuum sooner rather than later. We waited to get a real vacuum until a year and a half after we moved in. Worst decision ever. It clogged within five minutes of vacuuming the living room because there was so much hair.
3. Wine Bottle Stoppers- Buy these. Otherwise you'll be walking across the street drunk off your ass at 9:30 p.m. to buy them when do you lost track of the cork or accidentally threw it away, which brings me to my next point-
4. Wine Opener & Beer Bottle Opener- I'm in love with this wine opener from Amazon. I suck at corkscrews, so this one is much easier to use. Most of the beer we buy is twist top, but it is nice to have a bottle opener when fall comes around, and I want an Angry Orchard.
5. Batteries & Light Bulbs- These are both things I didn't think of until I needed them. I hate to waste money on them so I usually just stock up on both of these items at the dollar store.
6. Shoe Rack- Chances are, your closet is smaller than your bathroom, which isn't that big to begin with. Keeping your shoes organized in a shoe rack will save a lot of room, and help you to keep your closet clean.
7. Welcome Mat- You may not have much space outside of your apartment, but it definitely looks more like a home with the addition of a welcome mat. If you're anything like me, you'll be changing them out for every season or holiday that you can!
Stay tuned for more college related posts! I am working on one about splitting bills with roommates, as well as one on what to thrift shop for and what to buy new!
