How to Keep Your Carpet Looking and Smelling Fresh (Even with a Pup!)

I love my puppy, but at 8 months old, he is still not 100% potty trained (more on that later). So there are times during the night, where he does not let me know he needs to use the bathroom and will pee right on my beautiful new carpet 😭

So I truly mean it when I say I have tried almost every carpet cleaner out there. I am one of those people with cleaning anxiety, so I get really anxious when my house smells like dog or dog odors. Luckily, only the top floor of my house is carpeted.

I absolutely love my Green Machine (found here and sometimes on sale for around $80- still worth every penny) from Bissell, but I was not crazy about Bissell's cleaning formula because I could still smell a little dog pee odor even though the stains were completely gone. I have made my own cleaners using essential oils, and the smell was definitely gone for a little bit longer than with the Bissell cleaner, but it still came back.

Just recently I have found the most effective formula for both stain and odor removal, which I want to share with y'all today.

At my local WalMarket (my coined term for the Walmart Neighborhood Market) I was reading labels on all of the carpet cleaners that could be used inside my Green Machine. I was debating in being cheap and getting the Walmart Brand for $10 or buying a $20 professional grade brand that I had never heard of before. I decided to get the $20 professional grade, and I am so glad that I did. I also picked up a bottle of Bissell Stain Pretreat and decided to give that a try.

So now for the magic formula!

First, I treated the stains with the Bissell Stain Pretreat, and I left it for 5 minutes.

While that set it, I made my cleaner and water formula. I always use hot water. I do two parts hot water and one part cleaner in my Green Machine, then I proceed as normal and let it dry.

It is as easy as that, and no more doggy pee odor. I swear, he's lucky he's cute sometimes.
